“It’s a disaster.” Sam slumped into a chair in Richard’s office two days later and pinched the bridge of his nose.

“How bad?”

“Five passed. Ten crashed and burned.” He snorted. “But since I obviously can’t do or teach math, don’t take my word for it.”

“Ahh. Taking full responsibility, I see.”

“Wouldn’t you?” Humiliation burned up his throat. “And yes, you would so don’t try to deny it.”

“I probably would,” Richard agreed, “for a day. Then I’d get back in the swing of helping people work toward their goals.”

“Yeah, right.” Sam pushed to his feet and went to the window. “I guess this answers the question of whether I should stay on here.”

“I suspect my answer differs from yours right now.”

Sam turned. “You can’t possibly think I’m a good fit after such an epic fail.”

Richard met his frown calmly. “Well, first of all I don’t see this as your failure. Second, I’d hardly call it epic. And third, my opinion hasn’t changed one iota.” He held up a hand when Sam started to argue. “How about you take a seat and we figure out what went wrong for your students?”

Great. What could be better than dissecting my failure in minute detail? “I think right now I need a run to clear my head. Canada oughta do it.”

Richard laughed. “Fine. Go run, but make sure you have a return route.”

“While I’m gone, you’d better start thinking of hiring someone more effective and capable than me. That shouldn’t be hard.”

Kicking himself back to the townhouse, Sam changed into running gear and set out around Lake Calhoun. If he wanted to make it to Canada and back, he had to pace himself despite the urge to run hard and fast. The third lap had him sweating, the fourth out of breath.

He slowed halfway through the fifth to cool down, and walked back to the townhouse. Couldn’t he do anything right? A monkey could teach from that curriculum. The cold shower did little to lighten his mood. Maybe coffee would do the trick. And a chat with the lovely Martina, who deserved someone far better than him. He should do her a favor and stay away from her. He would, if he had her best interests in mind.

The Java Depot was unusually quiet when he entered. Marti swept at the far end. When she looked up, a delighted smile lit her face. Okay, that was way better than coffee. Or running to Canada.

As he approached, her smile faded. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. Why?”

“You look upset.” Her eyebrows pinched together. “Did something happen?”

Was he that much of an open book? He managed a half-smile. “I wanted to see my favorite barista.”

“Oh.” Color filled her face. “That’s nice.”

He wasn’t sure what he was aiming for, but nice wasn’t it. “You due for a break anytime soon?”

“Actually, I get off in,” she glanced over her shoulder, “ten minutes.”

“Great. Do you have anything planned?”

She shook her head.

“How about we walk over to see Katie?”

A smile bloomed, lighting her eyes. “I’d love that. She’s been asking to meet you.
