âItâs a disaster.â Sam slumped into a chair in Richardâs office two days later and pinched the bridge of his nose.
âHow bad?â
âFive passed. Ten crashed and burned.â He snorted. âBut since I obviously canât do or teach math, donât take my word for it.â
âAhh. Taking full responsibility, I see.â
âWouldnât you?â Humiliation burned up his throat. âAnd yes, you would so donât try to deny it.â
âI probably would,â Richard agreed, âfor a day. Then Iâd get back in the swing of helping people work toward their goals.â
âYeah, right.â Sam pushed to his feet and went to the window. âI guess this answers the question of whether I should stay on here.â
âI suspect my answer differs from yours right now.â
Sam turned. âYou canât possibly think Iâm a good fit after such an epic fail.â
Richard met his frown calmly. âWell, first of all I donât see this as your failure. Second, Iâd hardly call it epic. And third, my opinion hasnât changed one iota.â He held up a hand when Sam started to argue. âHow about you take a seat and we figure out what went wrong for your students?â
Great. What could be better than dissecting my failure in minute detail? âI think right now I need a run to clear my head. Canada oughta do it.â
Richard laughed. âFine. Go run, but make sure you have a return route.â
âWhile Iâm gone, youâd better start thinking of hiring someone more effective and capable than me. That shouldnât be hard.â
Kicking himself back to the townhouse, Sam changed into running gear and set out around Lake Calhoun. If he wanted to make it to Canada and back, he had to pace himself despite the urge to run hard and fast. The third lap had him sweating, the fourth out of breath.
He slowed halfway through the fifth to cool down, and walked back to the townhouse. Couldnât he do anything right? A monkey could teach from that curriculum. The cold shower did little to lighten his mood. Maybe coffee would do the trick. And a chat with the lovely Martina, who deserved someone far better than him. He should do her a favor and stay away from her. He would, if he had her best interests in mind.
The Java Depot was unusually quiet when he entered. Marti swept at the far end. When she looked up, a delighted smile lit her face. Okay, that was way better than coffee. Or running to Canada.
As he approached, her smile faded. âWhatâs wrong?â
âNothing. Why?â
âYou look upset.â Her eyebrows pinched together. âDid something happen?â
Was he that much of an open book? He managed a half-smile. âI wanted to see my favorite barista.â
âOh.â Color filled her face. âThatâs nice.â
He wasnât sure what he was aiming for, but nice wasnât it. âYou due for a break anytime soon?â
âActually, I get off in,â she glanced over her shoulder, âten minutes.â
âGreat. Do you have anything planned?â
She shook her head.
âHow about we walk over to see Katie?â
A smile bloomed, lighting her eyes. âIâd love that. Sheâs been asking to meet you.
